YANG BERHORMAT DATO SERI SETIA HAJI AWANG ABDUL MOKTI BIN HAJI MOHD DAUD

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud was appointed by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam as Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office on 30th January 2018 for a term of five years.

Yang Berhormat Dato joined the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on 1st December 1971, and held several positions in various ministries, including at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, as Deputy Minister, from 22nd October 2015 to 29th January 2018. Yang Berhormat Dato was also Deputy Director of the Islamic Da’wah Centre; Principal of the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers Training College (now known as Seri Begawan Religious Teachers Training College); Principal of the Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Secondary Boys’ School (SMALHB); Chief Religious Development Officer (Propagation and Tabligh); and Director of Propagation and Tabligh, as well as other important posts.

In addition to serving at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Yang Berhormat Dato briefly served as Deputy Director of Welfare, Youth and Sports at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (1983-1985).

For almost 30 years, Yang Berhormat Dato served at the then-Ministry of Foreign Affairs starting in the position of Director of Administration before becoming Private and Confidential Secretary to His Royal Highness Prince Mohamad Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time.

Yang Berhormat Dato also has vast working experience being appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and High Commissioner for 26 consecutive years. He is the longest-serving Head of Diplomatic Mission of Brunei Darussalam overseas. From 1989 to 1999, Yang Berhormat Dato served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and was at the same time appointed as Non-Resident Ambassador / High Commissioner to respective countries such as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain. He also managed Government of Brunei Official Affairs with the United Arab Emirates, the State of Qatar and the Government of Kuwait. From April 1996 to August 1997, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Yang Berhormat Dato was then appointed as the High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the Republic of India (1997-2001) and at the same time appointed as Non-Resident High Commissioner / Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sri Lanka and Nepal respectively. In the meantime, he also managed Government of Brunei Official Affairs with the Republic of Maldives. From 2001 to 2005, he was appointed High Commissioner to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

From May 2006 to November 2012, Yang Berhormat Dato was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and at the same time, he was also being appointed as Non-Resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Yemen at the same time. He also managed Government of Brunei Official Affairs at the same time with the Republic of Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs in 22nd October 2015, Yang Berhormat Dato was appointed for the second time as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 25th May 2013.

Yang Berhormat Dato often attends conferences and meetings abroad such as in New York, Washington DC, Geneva, United Kingdom, ASEAN countries, Cyprus, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Malta, Morocco, Egypt and several European countries.

Yang Berhormat Dato is also active in attending conferences and meetings as a member of delegation of His Royal Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade to European countries, the Middle East, Japan, Korea and several countries in Asia.

Yang Berhormat Dato received his early education at Sekolah Melayu Muhammad Alam in Seria, Sekolah Melayu Berakas, Sekolah Melayu Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College, and later pursued a University’s Degrees and Diplomas in several universities, colleges and educational institutions in Cairo (Arab Republic of Egypt), Birmingham (United Kingdom), Selangor (Malaysia) and the Republic of Singapore.

Yang Berhormat Dato is married to Datin Hajah Zalina binti Haji Omar and they are blessed with six children and nine grandchildren.
