On 1st March 1997, the Traffic
Investigation Unit, which was formally under the Criminal Investigation
Department, and the Traffic & Patrol Branch of the Operation Department,
were combined and formed into a department known as Traffic Investigation
and Control Department. The department is headed by a Superintendent,
which purely deals with matters relating to traffic.
The department is comprised
of 3 units, namely:
- Administration
- Investigation
- Operation
The Operation Unit is responsible
for the following tasks:
- Royal escorts motorcycles,
- Traffic control at appropriate
places, junctions, malfunction traffic lights and school areas in
order to ease traffic congestion,
- Round the clock highway
patrol and visits to the residencies of foreign ambassadors / high
commissions,
- Operating 'speed trap'
etc.
With its recent existence,
the department has set up another unit, known as Traffic Accident
Research Unit.
All serious and fatal accidents
throughout the state will be compiled. The unit is to analyse source
or cause of the accidents, and also responsible for inspection of
the vehicles involved scene / road with the Public Works Department
and Land Transport, and to make necessary recommendation with an effort
to minimise such cases.
Presently the unit has
6 personnels headed by a Senior Inspector and was fully operational
